Irlam is a flat area on the south bank of the Manchester Ship Canal and the M62 motorway. It is primarily residential, while the northern half of Irlam is predominantly agricultural moss land. It is located 6.7 miles (10.8km) southwest of Salford and 7.6 mi (12.2 km southwest) of Manchester. The city forms a continuous urban area with Cadishead and Flixton to the southwest across the ship canal.
Irlam, a residential area in Greater Manchester, England is known as the City of Salford. It was once part of the county of Lancashire. It contains Irlam and Lower Irlam as well as Cadishead, which is the most southwesterly settlement within the City of Salford. Irlam was on the northern bank of the River Irwell until its course was changed in the late 19th century to become part of the Manchester Ship Canal. Irlam's industrial development and growth as an inland port were stimulated by the ship canal. For much of the 20th-century steel, manufacturing was a significant source of employment. Northbank Industrial Estate is now located on the former site of steelworks.
A suburb of the Metropolitan Borough in Stockport, Greater Manchester. It is located 2.3 miles (3.7km) southwest of Stockport. It is 7.5 miles (12.1km) southeast of Manchester. It is located in the Ladybrook Valley on the Cheshire Plain. The drift consists mainly of boulder clay, gravel, and sand. It had 26,479. Cheadle Hulme railway station can be found close to Manchester Airport and the M60 motorway.
Local evidence of Anglo-Saxon, Bronze Age, and Roman activity has been found, including coins and jewelry. It was an estate that also included Cheadle, and was first mentioned in 1086's Domesday Book. It was divided into two parts in the early 14th century, at the future sites of Cheadle Hulme or Cheadle. In the 17th century, the Moseley family acquired the area and made it Cheadle Moseley. It did not develop around a church, unlike many English villages. Instead, it was formed from several hamlets. Many of these hamlets are still known as Cheadle Hulme neighborhoods. Cheadle Hulme, Cheadle, Gatley, and other nearby places were merged to create the urban district of Cheadle & Gatley in the late 19th Century. Cheadle Hulme was included in the Metropolitan Borough, Stockport.
